“Merry Christmas,” said Julie, to the phone she was holding, “do you know who this is?”
“Why of course I do,” replied Jason King, to his mobile phone thousands of miles from the caller. “It is Santa Claus, is it not?”
She giggled.
“It could be if you were here in Singapore, but I am assuming you are not.”
She replied, with a beaming smile on her face that she wished he could see.
“If the presents are good enough I could be on the next flight over,” he replied, equally pleased to be hearing from Julie, as she was, to be talking to him.
"I am sure you would be happy with the present I have for you," she said, cheekily.
"I will be on the next flight," he said, not joking.
"Nothing would make me happier but I have called to ask you a favour."
"Anything dear, you should know that."
Julie felt a warming sensation in her body, all over. There was just something he did to her that she had never felt before, even from the other end of a phone.
"I have just had a meeting with a woman by the name of Kirstie Martin," she continued, steadying her thoughts back to business, "she has been on the run now for something like twenty years and you’re not going to guess from who."
"The government would be a wild guess," he said, assuming the only reason she would be asking him, was because it had something to do with their own project.
"Yes, if you call Nigel Stansen the government."
"Well, technically he is everyone’s government."
He was right, she thought. She had known Nigel Stansen to be an international law since she had met him four years ago in Hong Kong.
"Well she is terrified of him and his people, I suggested she meet with you, she comes from Australia. I am assuming you are in Australia?"
"Yes dear, but I would like to be in Singapore at the moment."
She laughed.
"You wish."
"So, what is she hiding from Nigel for," he asked, getting the feeling he may not be able to go to Singapore immediately?
"Well, it seems she used to work for the Australian Government and was an attaché to Nigel’s UN team as representative of the Australians. When Nigel told her about what they were working on, at a briefing in nineteen seventy-seven, she freaked out and went on the run planning to tell the world what she knew."
"Nineteen seventy-seven? My god that is twenty-seven years ago. I must say, I am impressed she managed to keep Nigel’s team at bay for that long."
"Yes, she is pretty paranoid, believe me."
"Did she manage to tell anyone?"
"Well, that’s where it gets interesting. I think she was successful at being on the run because she has been assisted by the Chinese."
Julie knew firsthand how efficient the Chinese secret service was.
"That is interesting," said Jason, "nothing like a little international intrigue. So why did she come to you?"
"She finally figured out that the Chinese were as much keeping her quiet as Nigel was, so she decided to come to a newspaper. She picked up on an article I wrote. I believe it was the one you read."
"Oh yeah, the priest." Jason knew he had to be careful what he said on this topic. He had done his research and found the priest was once her romance as well. He could understand completely why even a man of God would give it up for a woman like Julie. "And, how do I come into this?"
"Well, she did have some interesting information she managed to get from the Chinese that I did not know, so I am wondering if you want to know. And, she is a nice woman, who is desperate to come back to reality."
"And, you thought I would be the type who can't resist helping a beautiful damsel in distress?"
"You said it."
"Haha, the only damsel I wish to save at the moment is masquerading as Santa Claus in Singapore,” he paused, “but I will meet with her if you think it would help."
"I actually think it might help you," she said, sincerely.
"Okay, sure, when is she coming?"
"She'll be there already spending Christmas with her family, and I think she wants to meet you first thing in the New Year. I have promised her you wouldn't tell anyone, especially Nigel."
"Of course I wouldn't, I don't need Nigel’s help."
"So I guess there is no point me coming to see you there," he said, with genuine disappointment.
"Probably not enough time, but I am free for a week in the New Year if you would like to spend it with me."
He smiled broadly and punched the air, knowing she could not see him.
"Okay, that sounds good, I will come to Singapore for a week."
He could hardly contain his excitement and thought he should change the topic.
"And the Chinese thing? What is that?"
"Well evidently they are building some huge city called 'shijian nang' and it has something to do with Nigel Stansen's UN project, but she wasn't sure if he knew about it, or whether the Chinese were doing this on their own. Have you heard of this?"
"No I haven't, but I would think Nigel would be interested since the translation of 'shijian nang' is 'time capsule'."
Chapter sixty four
The Fugitive
And the one who was seated on the thrown said
‘See I am making all things new’
Also he said,
‘Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.’
