Chapter sixty nine
The Awakening
Christopher Golde
His masked smile, his false grandeur,
Will serve the gods their anger stir
And they will send the dragon back
To light the sky, his tail will crack.
And man shall flee, king, lord and serf.

In every direction, there was nothing to be seen except red dirt dotted with low lying bush and desert scrub. Jason could feel the intense heat of the central Australian sun biting into every inch of exposed skin on his body. Julie Pierce stood next to him, her hands on her hips. She kicked her boot into the ground in disgust and causing a small puff of red dust to float off on the scorching breeze.
“Well,” she said, in sufferance, ”where is this thing you’ve dragged us out to this godforsaken place to see?”
“Not far now,“ Jason replied with a grin. ”How are you holding up Pietta,” he asked, looking over his shoulder at his business partner? He knew Pietta was no big fan of the great outdoors especially when it was as intense as this.
Pietta Chong looked out from under the wide brim of her straw hat, the small corks she had attached to ward off the flies skipped and bounced. Her smile was as radiant to Jason as ever.
“I’m okay,” she said softly, ” in its own barren desolate way it’s actually quite beautiful.”
“You’ve got to be joking,” replied Julie in disgust, looking at her incredulously, “I don’t think even hell would be this intense.”
Jason was amused at Julie’s intolerance and Pietta’s appreciation of the wilderness.
“Don’t worry, neither of you will ever get closer than this to hell.”
“You’d know,” came back Julie, being smart. Jason just lets it go and laughed.
“In less than a minute a car will pick us up,” he said, glancing at his watch.
“Sure,“ said Julie, “there’s not a car for miles in any direction.”
“Have faith,” he replied, “they’re just waiting for the chopper to be out of sight because it was a charter operation.”
“What?” Julie looked at him puzzled, not understanding what he meant.
“You’ll see,” said Jason.
Within a minute they heard a rumbling sound as if an army was approaching but still, they could see nothing.
“What the fuck,” said Julie, as the sound grew louder and louder.
Jason just stood there with a broad smile and then as suddenly as the rumbling had started it stopped. Julie looked sideways at Jason.
“Well!”
“They’re coming.”
No sooner had he said that than they heard the sound of a vehicle but still they could see nothing. Just as Jason pointed directly in front as if by some magic trick, a black Humvee personnel carrier popped up out of the desert no more than fifty yards away heading straight towards them flat out.
“The cavalry,” was all Jason said, and picked up Pietta’s suitcase for her as well as his own small case and waited. The totally blacked out vehicle ground to a halt directly in front of them and a soldier bounded out from the front door nearest to them. He stopped and saluted Jason.
“Sir!”
“At ease soldier,” said Jason casually, “let’s just get these ladies in out of the heat.”
The soldier responded immediately picking up Julie’s case and taking Pietta’s from Jason.
“Mam,” he said, with a broad Yankee drawl.
“Why thank you,” replied Julie, still stunned at everything. Pietta said nothing, as nothing ever surprised her when she was with Jason, not anymore.
Once they were all inside the vehicle it roared back off across the desert from where it had come. After covering the fifty yards of the rough desert plain, suddenly, it lurched forward, the wheels now rolled silently on a smooth surface and accelerated down a steep incline as the light outside the vehicle diminished. Julie stared through the heavy tint of the windows and could see that they had entered an enormous hole in the earth and were now descending rapidly down a ramp that absorbed them into desert sands.
After a seemingly short descent, the vehicle levelled out and Julie could now see that they were in a gigantic chamber illuminated by massive lamps that hung like stars in an extremely pitch-black night sky.
The vehicle sped along an artificial highway that was lined with row after row of military vehicles of all shapes and descriptions, which even included massive tank-like machines that had no gun turrets.
As they travelled, she could not help but notice there were no people to be seen anywhere, just machines.
‘How on earth did they get all this down here,’ she thought to herself, ‘without anyone even noticing?’
Finally, at the end of the highway they were travelling on, she could see two massive doors. The vehicle slowed and then the door began to open, one slid up, and the other down. Once they were fully opened their vehicle entered slowly, then stopped. The doors returned to the closed position locking them into almost complete darkness. Suddenly, the room they were now in illuminated with bright green light and she looked at Jason who just sat there smiling, his eyes seeming to glow an impossibly bright colour of green caused obviously by the artificial green they were all now bathed in. He was obviously entertained by the look on her face and then suddenly her stomach elevated upward as the whole room seemed to free fall. There was a gasp from Pietta’s direction and Julie felt she wanted to cry out but suppressed it, instead she raised her hand to her mouth. The free-falling seemed to continue for an eternity and when it finally stopped the green light faded and another two doors began to open except this time in front of them.
As the vehicle slowly drove out of the room onto what seemed like an elevated roadway, what they saw now defied belief. In front of them was a complete city, skyscrapers and all. The sky above the city was not blue though it was a brilliant red colour and there was activity everywhere, as overhead, helicopters hummed across the confronting skyline and glass-enclosed pathways carried passengers from building to building, while convoys of massive fully laden tracks passed underneath them on more interlaced, elevated highways. In the sky above them, hovered a particularly large menacing helicopter and as the Humvee came to a standstill the big bird touched down lightly in front of them and just waited.
One of the soldiers in their vehicle opened a door and held a hand out for Pietta who somewhat stunned accepted it and alighted. No-one said anything and Jason just gestured for them to head to the chopper waiting.
Once inside, Jason sat adjacent them both and said nothing. Julie looked into his green translucent eyes and went to speak but Jason just said softly
“Soon!”
Pietta just stared out the windows of the aircraft and said nothing as it lifted off and circumnavigated the underground alien city.
Jason sat in front of the two girls in what would seem to be the control room for the whole underground metropolis. He sat facing them and the amazing backdrop was the more than one thousand monitors mounted two stories high and surrounding a huge three-dimensional monitor that not only allowed the controller to see anything, or anywhere, in this strange world but also allowed them to seemingly enter and participate in whatever part of this world they could see.
The massive black control panel wrapped around his seat and was covered in luminous dials and switches, silhouetting him in a ghostly halo of reds blues and green. To the two women he had transformed somehow into some sort of technological god, but they knew in their hearts this was Jason King, their friend, a lover and a man.
Jason’s green eyes seemed to also have become luminous, his facial features were firm and nondescript as ever, yet they could somehow sense his warmth towards them. This was an ability Jason used and used well when communicating. He could somehow express a myriad of emotional sensations, yet, never change a single facial feature. To some this was intimidating, to others it was comforting.
“One day this underground city will be your home,” he began. Both girls sat expressionlessly but Jason knew they would be less than impressed by the prospect of that offer.
“I have a lot of explaining to do I know and some of what I am about to say you already know but without me putting it all together for you, it may not make much sense. I will tell you the whole story now as best I can and after you can ask me any questions you may have.”
He sipped water from his glass then began.
“Since the beginning of philosophical thought, man has speculated about his origins and pondered his future. Throughout the ages, there have come people who proposed that they could, or had seen, or had been told, what the future would bring. Many of these so-called prophets were people of science and most were extremely spiritual. People listened to them because, in their time, many were respected as quite believable and very intelligent. Essentially, what developed were two distinctly different, yet believable schools of thought. One scientific, one spiritual. What I am about to tell you is both yet in a strange way neither. You will no doubt ask at the end of my explanation why we built this city and many others like them and the answer would sound scientific? If you ask me if there is a God, I would answer that most likely there is, but you may not have expected what it may be. Yet, on the other hand, it may well be everything you wanted it to be. We still do not have all the answers, we will never have all the answers, I am confident of that. What I have now learned over the last twenty years and more specifically the last five years, I could speak philosophically about for many hours but at the moment we do not have the time and I doubt whether you girls have the patience or interest. The pure basic of all is that science is the how, spirituality is the why and the end result is the reason. I believe truly that is the simplest terms I can use to put the meaning of everything into.”
The girls looked at each other still puzzled and then back to Jason.
“I know, get to the point. Some of what I say now you will have to take on faith, some I can prove. Some I have ancient texts for.” He picked up an ancient-looking satchel from the table in front of him and put it back down again as if proving his credentials.
“Two and half thousand years ago a man on top of a mountain in the Middle East received a message and instructions that lay down the societal structure for most of our modern world. His name was Moses and the instructions he received are now called the Ten Commandments. Almost at the same time globally, similar messages were being given to other men in other cultures. What evolved eventually became ninety percent of our world’s religions.”
“Unbelievably, we now know that almost without exception, these messages were delivered by time travelling machines from the future.”
The girls now looked incredulously at Jason and then each other.
“I know that sounds bazaar and maybe even unbelievable, but it really isn’t all that incredible. For a long time now physicists have been, in theory, proving that travelling in time as possible. In fact, we experience it every day when we look at the stars in our sky. What we are seeing up there every night is at least hundreds of thousands of years in our past and sometimes we are affected by events that took place even millions and billions of years ago, and yet we see it now in our present. The distances are so huge, it takes that much time for light to travel to us. The perplexity of the problems time travel created was much fold, but not insurmountable. First, we needed something that could travel faster than light. One thing that does just that, we all have at our disposal; is thought. For modern man, human thought exists in the world of spirituality, but for the ancient and future man, it would exist in the world of science. Two twins either side of the world could experience the same pain instantaneously, fact or fiction, fact! Cutting a long scientific story even shorter, the man in the future will create tiny, less than molecular size machines, activated and controlled by thought. They will send them out into the universe, back to the beginning of time through warps in the time-matter fabric of space and discover the earth in its early primordial years of development. That’s where the second problem comes in; the paradox of changing what already exists. If we go back and kill our forefathers how can we then exist? That sort of thing. That’s where theoretical science comes in. For the last half-century, since Einstein developed the theory of relativity and thus quantum physics was later born, physicists have found it easier to accept that more than four dimensions can exist; the problem was how could it be proven any other way than in mathematical theory? Well, time travel suddenly made that not only possible but essential. It seems that more than four dimensions not only exist but can be created by changing an event in what we call the past. Just as every living creature on our planet exists in a complex symbiotic relationship, so does everything else in our universe, but only on a larger scale. Time is no exception to the rules. It is just another dimension to which the fabric of existence is measured. If we considered that everything somewhere in our future exists at a stage of particular growth, then by changing or pruning a new piece into the picture we can create a new branch of existence that eventually will become a part of the whole tree. To put it in very simple terms, the scientists of another time did an experiment to prove this as fact. This was mankind’s very first successful tinkering with time. They spent billions of dollars to send one of their time travellers back to destroy one apple tree in an apple orchard. They kept two apples from two different trees in identical environments. One was from the tree they would destroy in their past, the other from a different tree. Immediately their time traveller left the apple from the target tree began to deteriorate without explanation. The other apple remained perfect. The tree itself died as well, over a period of time all that remained were molecules that returned to the totality of existence. What they had created was an alternative existence, or parallel universe, which existed only until the only thing that was different in each was the memory of each. They even found that all records of their experiment somehow were destroyed and we, found out something even more astonishing. In later communications from these future scientists, their memories had even begun to alter and the first experiment became vague as time passed. Yet because for some reason we existed before the apple tree, we are able to record it. Now it seems that the world of these scientists was indeed much different to our own and they had used the first time travellers to improve things. First, they introduced the Ten Commandments and founded some of our most important religions such as Christianity and Islam. It evidently did help to improve their existences and subtle changes were immediately obvious, but then it happened. The fabric of existence began to take over. Just as they began to think that they could play God and change their world to their advantage, the real God seemed to step in.”
He paused for effect and to let them catch up mentally with what he was saying.
“With the destruction of the Temple of Emah, we recovered a time-traveller sent from the year 2045. It directed us eventually to an online blog would you believe, they had built on our internet from the future by using an Orb sitting on the bottom of the ocean. This time-travelling blog could have been and most likely was, found by our search engines in their relentless search for online information, but most likely no-one took any notice of it, probably assuming it to be a crackpot site, or fictitious novel if anyone actually read it. The startling revelation they wished to share with us was that they had discovered a comet travelling towards the Earth and due to hit in 2050. The problem for them was that five years was not enough time for them to make any significant preparation. Without a doubt, they knew they would be wiped out by the full force impact of the comet. Their only chance was if they could warn us in time and by some miracle if we could save ourselves, then they believed perhaps, they would survive also.”
“We checked the region of space they referred to and there it was, the comet of our ultimate destruction. We had missed it because we failed to calculate a collision it would have changing its direction towards Earth. The good thing was we had fifty years to prepare.”
“We heard no more after that from the future and we have worked feverishly since then to prepare for our survival. We have built giant underground cities which will hold ten million people for at least one hundred years and we have intensified our research into the possibilities that we can stop a comet from colliding with the planet.”
Jason stopped for a while and stared at the two girls. Their faces were frozen in astonishment.
“But that’s not all. That is only the scientific element of this story. You may think if you believe without a doubt what I have just told you, that whatever prophecies you have ever heard, were implanted by our children of the future. We not only know this is not true but I personally know that we are overruled by another power, much more in control of our destinies than we would ever care to believe. That is unless we believe in an omnipotent God.”
“I was never part of the plan by our future folk but I was always a part of the plan foretold by the prophets such as those who built the ‘Temple of Emah.’ In 1667 a messenger from the great Sir Isaac Newton delivered to the ‘Temple of Emah’ a manuscript called ‘The Principia Creation’, it was the sister document to the famous work by Newton called ‘The Principia Mathematica’.”
Jason held up the ancient satchel again.
“This unknown manuscript by Newton was the second part to his ‘Mathematica’ manuscript on the laws of physics that dominated the scientific beliefs of mankind for four hundred years and led to the industrial revolution and the mechanization of the modern world. Once translated, this second script describes how Newton had been taught the physics of motion by a dark, mysterious spirit he referred to as ‘The Darkness.’ Because of this, he had become a devout believer in God and biblical prophecy. The second half of his life was almost totally devoted to this quest and most of his colleagues were convinced he had gone mad. He had been told by ‘The Darkness’ to write ‘The Principia’ in full by finding an ancient manuscript that had been passed down a chain of keepers for thousands of years, finally being passed to the Roman Catholic church by the Knights Templar and then to a guy called Galileo for safekeeping until Newton was born. He was instructed develop a key to translate the ancient language and then to deliver this second manuscript to the ‘Temple of Emah’, where it would be guarded until the intended recipient would come to receive it. ‘The Principia Creation’ stayed with the monks for almost four hundred years until I arrived and discovered that the intended recipient was in fact myself. Amazingly, my Grandmother had been given the key to the ‘Principia Creation’ when she was young by your Grandfather Julie, to pass on to me when I was ready. She passed away before she could give it to me personally so she gifted it to me in my father’s favourite stamp collection.”
Jason could see the look of amazement on Julie's face.
“Don’t ask me how your Grandfather came to have it, but it was then that I knew what I had experienced in my early life was all true, for I too had been educated by ‘The Darkness’ since the age of seven and prepared for this day.”
Jason paused momentarily to take some water and looked at the emotional faces of his audience.
“It seems that my grandmother was the key to me understanding what the ‘Creation’ document meant, as it was not written in any language that is alive today on Earth. When I returned from the Temple, I recovered the key from the stamp collection and once I had translated the ancient text, it took me on a journey to the middle of Australia to meet an Aboriginal warrior that guarded the secret of time and Universal knowledge. It was his destiny in life to wait for me to come and then share with me the dreamings of his people. Those dreaming’s told me about earthquakes and destruction that would come to the world and how it was nature’s way of culling the human race. The Australian Aboriginals called it the coming of the Rainbow Serpent, where the land would rise and swallow its people and only those in tune with nature would survive. I followed the instructions from the Aboriginal Elders and ended up having my own Dreaming which showed me the destruction that would come. As per my vision, the Indo-Australia tectonics palates started shifting dramatically in 2004 which resulted in giant tsunamis killing hundreds of thousands of people in Asia. I had shared the prophecies with Nigel’s United Nations committee but unfortunately, at that stage of their investigations, the governments that knew were reluctant to share the information and some still doubted the reliability. As you know, a quarter of a million people did die in 2004 and since then in 2016, and 2018 and soon it will happen again, on an even larger scale, all around the Pacific Rim. If my visions are correct it will rip whole continents apart before it settles.”
The shock of what he had just shared with them was more than evident on the two girl’s faces and he noticed Pietta was gently sobbing and trying not to let anyone see.
“So it seems ladies, we humans were wrong to think we could control our universal destiny and even our friends in the future mistakenly thought they could outrun creation. It seems our future existence and what form it will take is determined by a far more superior power, one that expects us to evolve and one day be worthy to fulfil its needs, whatever that may be. I believe now, that the Universe wants us to fight for our survival as part of our education as a primitive species. Our history is now a mosaic of neural development, our future father’s intentions and divine determination creating a magnificent creature for the future of which we and every microscopic part of our being will one day be a part of. There is no waste, everything, every action, every event, has a purpose. We now know why creation is so perfect, so interwoven, and so godly. It is because it can be recreated a billion times over until it is right and the result is perfect. What our children of the future did a few times, has been done a billion times over by a creature, or being, many times our superior. Perfection is no coincidence. Quantum chaos is very real and when you have the ability to correct a mistake of creation, it is just a matter of time before you will get it right. As for everything else, we now have the answers to advance our sciences ten times over, yet we still have so much more to learn. The ever-increasing expanse of our enlightenment also makes us aware of how incomprehensibly large the darkness is.”
Jason watched carefully the reaction of the girls. He could see that Julie was busting to ask a million questions. It was her journalistic instinct to do so. He smiled at Julie.
“You can ask and I will endeavour to answer.”
Julie momentarily hesitated then burst out.
“So you’re like……. Son of God or something?
What is this ‘Darkness’? How can we save them, the future, if they’re already destroyed? Where are the other underground cities? When is……….”
“Whoa, one at a time.” Jason held up his hand towards Julie who stopped.
“Firstly, we are all children of this God, we are all a part of this creation, I am just like dozens of others throughout history that have been used to pass a message and to assist with the direction of our journey. ‘The Darkness’, as far as I can determine, is representative of the physical consciousness of God. We don’t know that the children of the future have been destroyed by the comet, only that they have sent no more messages and we are confident that some of us and future generations will survive, but it is likely to be a very different world. What was the last question? Oh yeah, there is one on each continent and two in Europe and two in China.”
Jason looked at Pietta who sat quietly, while Julie wrestled with her self-restraint.
“Pietta darling,” Jason said softly, leaning towards her, “are you okay? Do you want to ask any questions?”
She looked at him and he saw her tears rolling down her cheeks. She blinked and put her hand up to wipe them away as if she could hide it from him. She looked down but he reached for her chin lifting it gently. For a moment she looked at him then in synchronism they embraced each other. He held her to his chest cradling her on his shoulder; he inhaled her and closed his eyes, resting his chin on her soft black hair. Julie, completely frustrated, could only watch out of respect for the friendship and love she knew they shared. She had a deep and passionate love for Jason, but then, just for a moment, she thought of Aldo and how this journey had begun in that hotel in Hong Kong what seemed so long ago. She wished he was here to hold her now, who knows she thought maybe in some other world he is.
